And her name is...

Enough fun and games. I'm pretty sure anyone reading this has probably already heard via phone, but maybe there are a few others out there who would like to know.

Baby girl's name is....
Ingrid Mae Kempe

We just like the name Ingrid and it also happens to be Swedish, so we can salute Tim's heritage a bit. Mae is after my dear roommate, Mae Mae, from Wheaton College.

We can't wait to meet her. Now she just needs a place to sleep. Anyone looking to buy a house??

Clue #3

Well, we couldn't get a video of Shepherd telling you baby girl's name, but he is giving you a hint about her middle initial here:

We'll give a clue about her first initial too: It's a vowel...

Hope some of you have figured it out. We'll let you know soon!

Clue #2

Some people were not very happy with clue #1...

Clue #2: Her first name is of Scandinavian origin and means beautiful.

Here are some blurry pictures of the Shep. He wouldn't stay still. What a surprise!

More to come later...

The Name Game

We have been busy and Shepherd is growing like crazy. (Actually, I am too...)
These pictures are from Shelby Farms last weekend. We sure are enjoying this fall weather!

I am about 25 weeks along and everything is going well. Baby girl will be here before we know it!

Certain people have been waiting patiently to find out baby girl's name, and we've finally decided, so we'll keep it a secret no longer. Shall we make it a little game of sorts?

Clue #1: Her name is not what we thought we would name Shepherd if he had been a girl.

Stay tuned...
More clues to come over the weekend! Have a great Saturday!

Shepherd is One!

Although I am a month and a half late in posting this, the title is technically still accurate, seeing that he is still one... For Shep's birthday, we just had a fun family get together. We had a dog-themed birthday party since that is one of Shep's favorite things right now. Shepherd ate his own birthday cake and did a pretty good job on it. I made it just for him: wheat-free and egg-free!

Some things of note right now for Mr. Shep:
-He is walking like a pro. He probably started about one month ago when he was 12.5 months old.
-He is still doing great eating table food. He is a fruit lover at the moment. If there is fruit in sight he does not want anything else.
-He is strongly resisting switching from a bottle to a sippy cup. He has successfully switched entirely to whole milk, but he still prefers it heated and in a bottle. As of now he drinks one of his servings of milk per day out of a cup. As have been all food-related things with him, I think this will be a slow transition. His pediatrician told us to switch cold turkey, which we tried for about a day. I probably didn't give it long enough, but he drank zero milk that day and I think he would have been pretty stubborn about not drinking from a cup, so we nixed that idea and are going to try a more gradual transition.
-He is saying a few words: dada, mama (very, very rarely), all done, cup, uh uh (for uh oh), uh uh (for wuff wuff - can't really tell the difference between the two unless you know what he's talking about), go (says at random and for crashing towers of blocks)
-He is in Nursery III at school and sleeps on a mat on the floor for naptime and eats in a big boy chair at a table. We can't believe that he does either of these things!
-Still loves Bea. Gives her regular hugs and kisses and always want to be the one to give her treats.
-Still allergic to wheat and eggs. We have to send him his own food to school instead of him eating off the menu. Tim and I always spend part of our evening after he has gone to bed preparing/cutting up his various meals and snacks for school. We hope he out grows this sooner rather than later!
-His personality is very sweet and usually easy going. He still prefers me or Tim to anyone else, especially in a new situation. He is usually going non-stop, and it is hard to keep up with him.

Here are a couple more pics:

First time to have the famous refried beans at Molly's. They were a hit!

Our view from the bathroom in the morning. Shep is usually an early riser. He stands in his jumperoo and watches Baby Einstein from the hallway while we get ready.

In other news, I started residency on July 1. It has been good, but busy. It's been an adjustment for me to be working from 8-5 everyday, but it could be a lot worse. I am currently doing surgical pathology at the VA now through October. It is a busy rotation, and I have a lot to learn!

We had our 20 week ultrasound of baby #2 yesterday, and found out that we're having a girl!! She looked great and healthy and we are very excited! We haven't decided on a name yet, but hopefully in the near future.

Our house is still on the market with little sign of selling anytime soon. We may be squeezing baby girl in here after all!

To hold you over...

Well it's been a long time since I've posted and that is because we are busy! I still need to do Shepherd's birthday post (which happened one month ago)! But until then, here are some pics from my iPhone to hold you over for the time being. I'm sure they are probably blurry.

A budding Beethoven?

Also, due to my lack of blogging I have not yet announced some big news in our house. Here is a little hint:

Aside from the fact that I am wearing scrubs everyday to work, you may also be able to see my 18 week baby bump! Yes- baby #2 is due on January 15! We find out the sex next week. We can't wait to have another little one in the Kempe house!

11 Months

Shepherd turned 11 months on June 10th. I'm a little late on the post, but I wanted to be sure and document some of his milestones this month.

Eating: Shep pretty much just decided one day that he would start eating table food. Woo hoo! I thought he was going to be eating baby food forever, but he's proved me wrong. He will eat most everything that we eat so far. He seems to like meat the best, but he hasn't really turned away anything yet. We're having to deal more with the allergies now that he's eating table food, but it hasn't been too difficult. So far I've made some pasta with rice-based noodles (instead of wheat) that he loved and some wheat-free egg-free waffles from a gluten free bisquik mix. He didn't love those quite as much, but I think it was because he was more focused on the sugar-covered fruit topping. Meal time is much easier when you don't have to spoon feed a baby the entire time! Also, he is completely weaned now. Yay! The only downside has been that after tasting formula, he no longer wants any breast milk and I have a ton of it saved up in the freezer. Anyone know someone in need of about 200 oz of breast milk?? He is a stinker... Oh well.

Sleeping: He is generally sleeping great (although I hesitate to say that after a horrible night last night of being up for 3 hours!). Along with weaning came some difficulties at bedtime with falling asleep because he was no longer being nursed to sleep. But after we decided to bite the bullet and let him cry for a few nights, he is doing great at putting himself to sleep in his crib. We followed some of the tips in the sleep book by Richard Ferber, and they are pretty effective. He has also been sleeping from about 8-6 most nights without any prolonged wakenings.

Other milestones: He is getting some major teeth recently. He's getting the outside top teeth right now, so he's going to be a little snaggle-toothed for a while but I can already see the middle ones coming through too so it won't be long before he has 4 on the top.

Still no walking, but he is a cruising and crawling pro. He's not showing any signs of walking really soon, but who knows. With his increased mobility, he has been chasing Bea around the house even more. Bea does not appreciate that he now crawls under the table with her. Her only place of escape is under our bed. He is very sweet to her, though, and gives her lots of hugs and kisses, probably more than he gives me and Tim.

He hasn't really said any "real" words yet, but he does seem to be trying to talk some. If I tell him no repeatedly when he's doing something he shouldn't he will say na-na sometimes. Then he usually proceeds to do what he was doing... He says da-da all the time, but not just in reference to Tim. It is a very universal word at this point. He has also started saying something that begins with a "T" type sound. We think it is in reference to when he wants an object. He says it pretty reliably when he wants his cup. He has also learned the sign language signs for "more" and "all done". This has been very helpful for mealtimes. Recently, he has not been wanting to say all done when we want him to. Last night at Panera, he ate the grilled chicken from my salad for about 20 minutes after Tim and I were done. Hungry boy!

Well, that's about it for now. Here are just a few pictures. The first are to show his new-found love for table food. The second are to show that he almost always has his tongue sticking out now. I guess the new teeth feel weird to him. It's pretty cute. It also shows that I was having trouble getting any pictures of him because he kept crawling up to the camera and trying to take it from me!

Vacation

We just got back from a whole week at the beach! It was so great to relax and get to spend some time with our family. Shepherd was not a fan of the water at first. He actually fell asleep in the pool the first time we got him in. I'll assume it was just that relaxing and not that he was completely overstimulated by the experience. But over the week, he warmed up to the idea of being in the pool, at least if he was being held and not in a float. He also really liked playing in the sand. Here are some pics:

Cousins.
I thought this picture was funny - maybe foretelling of some future cousin rivalry?

Also, I graduated! Commencement was on May 27, 2011. I'm now officially an M.D.!! Woohoo! Four years of hard work have come to an end. I'm sure I have years more of hard work, but it sure feels good to finally have a degree to show for all of that studying and working!

10 Months

I'm sure you're all tired of my blurry iphone pictures, so here is a "real" post. Shep will be 10 months on the 10th. A mini golden birthday if you will. This has been a fun month, but I will say that keeping up with the little man is becoming more of a challenge! Some things Shepherd is doing:

Milestones: He is pulling up on everything. In my opinion he is a bit over-confident, but I guess that's the only way to learn. There have been several falls due to forgetting to hold on to something or trying to walk somewhere (despite not mastering that skill yet). He is learning to sit down from standing, so that is helping. He has also started crawling some as opposed to his usual scoot. At this point, crawling is much slower, so he usually switches back to scooting. Those are the major milestones I can think of. He has started to mimic us some, which is cute. He will try to make a fish sound by moving his finger between his lips if he sees us do it first.

Eating: Not much progress here. The pediatrician gave us the go-ahead for all table foods, but Shep has shown no interest. We try to offer him things off of our plate at dinner, but it usually just makes him mad. I think we'll be stuck on baby food for a little longer. We went to the allergist this month and got some skin testing done. It looks like Shepherd is allergic to just eggs and wheat. This is good news because he is more likely to outgrow these than a peanut allergy, which we originally thought he had based on the blood test. It's bad news because eggs and wheat are going to be pretty hard to avoid. As far as nursing goes, we are officially weaning. Yay! Hopefully it won't take long. We're hoping to have it done by then end of the month. He's had some formula and didn't mind it, and we have lots of frozen milk stored up.

Sleep: Night-time sleep is good some nights and bad others. He is just getting over (we hope) a month-long ear infection that we ended up getting 3 different antibiotics for. He ended up getting 3 shots of antibiotic at the end of it because the liquid meds weren't cutting it. The shots were super-big and it was not fun to take him 3 days in a row for a shot. Anyways...his sleep was pretty rough throughout the ear infection, but it seems to be getting better. He is a great napper during the day, especially when he's at home. He usually takes 2 2-hour naps a day.

Personality: In a few words: sweet, squirmy and constantly moving, cautious (selectively), dislikes change, dog-loving, easy going. We love our little man. Can't believe we've only got 2 months until he's one!

Now time for pictures!

Bath time. He's graduated to the big tub and seems to like it.

The four Kempe Grandsons.
Tim and Shepherd, Joe and Brendan and Oliver, and Brita and James

Pulling up is all the rage! This is how he spends most of his time these days.

Mother's Day. Not the best picture, but believe me, many were worse!
It was my first "official" Mother's day, although I was pregnant with Shep last year. I have loved being a mom and want to say Happy Mother's/Grandmother's Day to my mother and
mother-in-law, Gigi and Grandma! We love you!

And lastly, a picture of our house. This 1100 sq foot baby will hopefully be on the market by the end of the month. It has served us well, but with the addition of Shep, space is getting tight. If you want a head start on the masses, let me know and we might just work out a deal!

Monday, Monday

Shepherd is home sick today. He can't seem to kick this ear infection. This morning he got a big, nasty shot of antibiotics, and we're going back tomorrow for another. Hopefully this will be the end of it.

Shep is not a very good eater, especially in the midst if this ear infection. Sometimes it is easiest to let him do something else to distract himself and just sneak the bites in when you can. Today at lunch it was tearing up a paper napkin. So entertaining!

New Life

How fitting that on Easter weekend mama bird's babies would finally hatch! I was starting to get worried but sure enough her hard work paid off and now we get to see little beaks reaching up for worms.

A small reminder of the new life we have in Christ because of his death and resurrection.

New tricks

I mentioned Shepherd was starting to pull up and i knew he'd be standing up in his crib soon. Our room is directly across from his and we sleep with both bedroom doors open so we don't have to use a monitor. This morning when we woke up we had a cute little face staring us down!

After (sort of)

I thought it would never be done, but the entertainment center is finally functional again! I still want to put backing on it so you can't see the wall and all of those cords behind it. I've already bought the wood for that but I'm just trying to decide on the best/cheapest way to do it. It may involve some wallpaper or fabric, we'll see. But other than that, it's unofficially done! I'm very happy with the results! Everything is still sitting on paper or placemats because I don't want to mess up the paint. Hope you like it!

You go girl!

It has been pouring rain all day and this little lady has staid put in her nest-right on top of our circuit breaker box. This only contributes to my belief that women are stronger than men-at least when it comes to enduring uncomfortable situations. Hopefully her hard work will pay off and we'll see some cute little birdies in the next few weeks!
